#84000BUDDHACAMPAIGN

We are very grateful for a very generous financial support of $540,000.00 from the Founder of A Khmer Buddhist Foundation (AKBF), in early November 2023. And, together with the financial support from many other Cambodian Americans, we were able to pay off the $840,000.00 mortgage and got the Deeds of the properties transferred from the Community of Khmer Buddhist Monks to Vatt Khmer Lowell & Khmer American Cultural Center on November 31, 2023.

Now that the mortgage had been paid off and also having received the Site Approval and Permit from the city and state governmental agencies in hand, the Buddhist Sangha, Board of Directors and members of the Development Committee are embarking on an ambitious 84,000-Buddha Capital Campaign project to fundraise $15 to $18 million to build the temple and cultural center itself on the 12 acres of forested land located along the Merrimack River in Lowell, MA.

Our humble goal is to appeal to all Cambodian and non-Cambodian alike to help us making our dream Temple/Cultural Center a reality so that we can further provide critical programs and services for the 30,000+ Cambodian American community in the greater Lowell, Massachusetts and beyond.

Why 84,000?

The Buddha is said to have delivered some 84,000 teachings, or Dharma, over his lifetime some 2568 years ago. These teachings have been documented in numerous volumes of the Tipitaka, the Pali Canon, which is an ancient Indian text.

These 84,000 Dharma-teachings have been categorized into three baskets: (1) Vinaya Pitaka (Basket of Discipline) = 21,000 Dharma; (2) Sutra Pitaka (Basket of Discourse) = 21,000 Dharma; and (3) Abhidharma Pitaka (Basket of Scholastic analysis or Higher Doctrine of the Buddha’s teachings in the Sutras) = 42,000 Dharma.

Because of the significance of this auspicious 84,000 number, the late Venerable Sao Khon Dhammathero and members of the Cambodian Buddhist devotees have adopted this number as their ambitious 84,000-Buddha Capital Campaign project.

Our humble goal is to reach out and appeal to all the Cambodians and non-Cambodian alike to help us developing 84,000 Buddha statues by donating $100 to $500 each in order fundraise enough funds to build Vatt Khmer Lowell & Khmer American Cultural Center to further provide critical programs and services to the growing Lowell’s 30,000+ Cambodian American community, which is the second largest in the country.
